Today was just a recreational dive trip, but Morgan was out on spring break and really wanted to get out fishing. I asked my divers if they had any problem with someone fishing while they were up doing their surface intervals between dives. The answer was a unanimous NO so out we went. In the limited time he had to fish he boated 2 keeper red grouper and probably caught over 50 that were short. The highlight of the day also came between dives as we all got to watch a Goliath Grouper inhale what was probably a 20+ lb gag grouper right below the boat. Morgan hooked him and was reeling him up when he got smacked the 1st time. The Goliath let go and all we could do was yell to reel as fast as possible. With the gag in clear sight about 20 feet down this enormous Goliath rose right up under him, opened his mouth and just inhaled the gag before turning and taking everything back down to the wreck. It was a scene right out of a movie or National Geographic. Simply awesome!!!!!!!!!
But then again, according the board at the National Marine Fisheries Services, Goliath Grouper only eat crustaceans.
