Diving & Spearfishing:

The water temps have dropped into the upper 50s after the most recent string of cold fronts, but hopefully the current warm spell will heat the Gulf back into the 60s. The same fronts have reduced visibility and put all diving on hold. If we can get a week of calm weather the visibility should return and our great winter wreck diving will return.  Spearfishing will all depend on the water temperature. This will probably be the last month with consistent hogfish and keeper red grouper till they travel south to find warmer water. We’ve also seen big amberjacks sporadically on near shore wrecks and have even shot a few cobia.  The constant for those with an itchy trigger finger are snapper until gags open up and temps begin to rise in early spring.

Fishing:

Fishing will take center stage as January marks the close of all our grouper for the next 2 months. The 10 degree drop in water temperature in the last 2 weeks means the action will be furious as both gags and the remaining reds try to fatten up for the cold winter months ahead. In the few trips we have been able to run, we’ve boated some nice keeper reds along with trophy size gags. The snapper are always feeding along with big amberjacks when we find live bait.
